Literacy

In Ballyclare Primary School we know the importance of Literacy as a vital way of communicating in school and in everyday life. In Literacy, pupils develop skills in Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing. We enable them to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. The effectiveness of Literacy teaching and learning impacts the success of the whole curriculum and strong literacy skills allow children to communicate effectively both inside and outside school.

Language is an essential element of learning in all areas of the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged and helped to talk clearly, confidently and with expression in order to communicate their ideas and feelings. Similarly, we focus on the importance of listening to others and responding appropriately.

We aim for our children to become confident, enthusiastic and critical readers. We use a range of methods to teach children not only to read fluently but to develop a genuine love of books and a desire to read for pleasure and purpose. Pupils are encouraged to take books home to practise their reading each evening and guidance is provided to help parents support children in their reading journey.

Every day, pupils are helped to creatively express their thoughts and ideas through the written word. We believe it is important that children see their writing as having purpose and that they regard themselves as young authors. Opportunities are provided for children to develop the necessary writing skills required for different purposes and audiences. The link between reading and writing is strongly emphasised.
